Dinosaurian survivorship schedules revisited: new insights from an age‐structured population model

چکیده
Little is known of dinosaur population biology due to insufficient information on age-dependent fecundities and mortalities. So far, survivorship curves (SC) only six dinosaurs (four tyrannosaurs, one ceratopsian, hadrosaur) have been erected from bone assemblages aged specimens. They indicate high survival throughout most their life with presumably higher mortalities after hatching increasing towards its end. However, none these studies recognized that infer a reliable SC for taxon, the assemblage must preserve stationary age distribution (i.e. which stable, constant size over time as overall match mortalities, hereafter SAD population). To assess SCs dinosaurs, I built simple model rates. Its three input parameters are maximum longevity, at sexual maturation annual offspring number, exists dinosaurs. As histological scaling relationships provide estimates parameters, my also applicable other extinct taxa. Modelling suggests did not populations. determined populations Albertosaurus sarcophagus, Gorgosaurus libratus, Dasplatosaurus torosus Tyrannosaurus rex indicated low followed in early or mortality rates were rather life. In Psittacosaurus lujiatuensis, modelling increase Due simplicity, was unable render composite SCs, specifically sigmoidal shape previously predicted Maiasaura peeblesorum.

متن کاملCommentary: insights from cross-population studies: Rose revisited.
The serum cholesterol concentrations of the local (mainly rural) population samples in the Seven Countries Study appear to have truly reflected the national differences (though not necessarily the national averages), since they correlate so remarkably well with the national differences in mortality. The high correlations also vindicate the use of national mortality rates, since errors in the da...
متن کاملModel Fertility Schedules Revisited: The Log-Multiplicative Model Approach
This paper reconsiders Coale and Trussell’s (1974) specification of model fertility schedules by age. It formally presents model fertility schedules within the framework of categorical data analysis. Specifically, births are assumed to follow an independent Poisson distribution for each age interval of each population. Identification and estimation problems are discussed. It shows that the Coal...
متن کاملInduction of secondary axis in hydra revisited: New insights into pattern formation
In 1909, several years before the famous `Organizer’ experiments of Spemann and Mangold, Ethel Browne demonstrated induction of a secondary axis in hydra by grafting a hypostome. Based on this and subsequent work, in the late sixties, Lewis Wolpert proposed the theory of morphogen gradients and positional information. We have studied secondary axis induction by hypostome and foot tissue using t...
